Accelerating RCM World’s Retail Applications Using Amazon CloudFront.
RCM World began its operations in 2000 and has grown into one of India’s leading direct-selling companies. Today, RCM empowers over 20 million Direct Sellers with a portfolio of 400+ quality products. With large-scale manufacturing facilities in Bhilwara, Guwahati, and Roorkee, and a corporate hub spanning 1.7 million square feet, RCM operates a nationwide retail and distribution network through 180 depots and more than 10,000 stores.
As part of its digital transformation journey, RCM required a high-performance, secure, and scalable content delivery platform to support millions of users accessing e-commerce portals, distributor dashboards, internal applications, and partner systems across India.
Amazon CloudFront, combined with production-grade Lambda@Edge, became the core global delivery and security layer enabling this modernization.
The Challenges
Legacy Infrastructure Limitations
On-premises and region-bound hosting could not deliver application assets efficiently across India’s geographically distributed retail and distributor network, resulting in increased latency and inconsistent user experience.
Unpredictable Retail Traffic Patterns
Daily sales peaks, distributor login bursts, inventory synchronization, festival seasons, and product launches created highly variable traffic loads. The platform required an edge layer capable of absorbing spikes without impacting backend performance.
Business Continuity & Nationwide Availability
To maintain uninterrupted retail operations across India, RCM needed an edge delivery architecture that ensured availability even during backend slowdowns or network disruptions.
Secure Delivery of Retail & Distributor Data
Sensitive distributor information, authorization tokens, and application assets required encrypted delivery, controlled access, and protection against malicious traffic.
Complex AWS Workload Integration
As applications migrated to AWS services such as Amazon ECS, Amazon RDS (PostgreSQL), and Amazon S3, the frontend delivery layer needed to seamlessly support containerized workloads, dynamic APIs, and static content. It also had to efficiently handle Single Page Application (SPA) behavior while minimizing latency and backend load.
Cost & Change Management at Scale
With over 20 million users, reducing direct load on S3, ALB, and ECS origins was critical to controlling cloud costs while enabling rapid application updates.
The Solution
To address these challenges, HabileLabs implemented Amazon CloudFront with production Lambda@Edge as the unified content delivery, security, and acceleration layer for RCM World’s retail ecosystem.
CloudFront-Based Modernization
Multiple Amazon CloudFront distributions were deployed to support public e-commerce portals, distributor dashboards, internal administrative interfaces, and partner-facing applications. Static assets were migrated to Amazon S3 and secured using Origin Access Control (OAC), ensuring that all content was served exclusively through CloudFront and preventing direct access to origin resources.
SPA-Optimized Delivery Architecture
Single Page Applications hosted on Amazon ECS and Amazon S3 were optimized using intelligent cache policies for both static and dynamic assets, deep-link routing with automatic /index.html rewrites, and friendly fallback routing for 403 and 404 errors. Compression using GZIP and Brotli, along with HTTPS enforced via TLS 1.3, ensured fast page loads, smooth navigation, and a consistent user experience even during peak traffic periods.
Edge Compute with Lambda@Edge (Production)
Lambda@Edge functions were deployed and actively used in production, associated with CloudFront behaviors to enhance performance, security, and routing logic directly at AWS edge locations. These functions handled security header injection, request normalization, cache key optimization, geo-based access validation for India-only retail access, intelligent edge routing for application paths, and protection against malformed or suspicious requests. Executing this logic at the edge reduced backend dependency and significantly improved overall responsiveness.
High-Scale, Fault-Tolerant Edge Architecture
CloudFront’s globally distributed edge network, combined with strategically located India-based edge locations, provided low-latency access across both metropolitan areas and remote towns. High cache-hit ratios for frequently accessed content ensured consistent performance and resilience during nationwide sales campaigns and high-traffic events.
Layered Edge Security
CloudFront was integrated with AWS WAF for DDoS protection and intelligent request filtering, enforced HTTPS-only traffic, and implemented Origin Access Control (OAC) along with signed URLs to secure protected resources. Geo-restrictions were applied to limit content access to India, strengthening the overall security posture and significantly reducing the application attack surface.
Operational Efficiency & Automation
CloudFront was seamlessly integrated into RCM’s CI/CD pipelines, enabling automated cache invalidations during deployments, zero-downtime UI rollouts, and rapid propagation of updates across the country. This automation allowed teams to release features faster without disrupting ongoing business operations.
Business Impact
- Scalability on Demand: CloudFront seamlessly absorbed peak traffic during festival sales, new product launches, distributor login surges, and high-volume order cycles without impacting backend stability.
- High Availability & Resilience: Edge caching ensured uninterrupted access even during backend performance degradation, regional network instability, or temporary service interruptions.
- Accelerated Innovation: Automated deployments and instant global cache invalidation enabled faster feature rollouts and significantly improved development velocity.
- Stronger Security & Compliance: Encrypted delivery, reduced origin exposure, and edge-enforced access controls strengthened the security posture and improved compliance for sensitive retail and distributor data.
- Cost Control & Operational Efficiency: Reduced origin traffic led to lower S3 data transfer costs, decreased ALB and ECS compute usage, and optimized overall network bandwidth consumption.
